After the money revelation, Henry devolved into a blubbering mess. We weren't going to get anything else out of him until he sobered up, and from the looks of him, that wasn't happening anytime soon.

Throwing in the towel, we went in search of Suzanne, the sister who controlled Fergus's money. She wasn't hard to find — all we had to do was knock on her hotel room door, though Hunter ended up having to announce who he was to get her to open it.

The woman was a mess. Her platinum hair was disheveled, and her blue eyes were red from crying. She was still in her robe, and her mascara was so messed up that she looked like a deranged raccoon. She’d definitely seen finer days, but given her brother had been murdered less than twenty-four hours ago, she looked pretty darn good.

"Come in, Sheriff," she said, pulling open the door and stepping back so we could enter the room. "Sorry it took me so long to answer, but I thought you were just another one of my mooching family members wanting money."

The room was tastefully decorated in gold and cream, and I sighed when I saw the half empty bottle of scotch sitting on a room service tray.

She gave me a small smile when she followed my gaze. "Don't worry. That was from last night, and I learned that no amount of booze is gonna wash away the pain. My brother had his problems, but he was good to me growing up. He wasn't a bad man. He was just a man that made bad decisions, and it seems one of them finally caught up with him."

I opened up my senses and sent out a tendril of magic even though I had no doubt this woman was telling the truth. Aside from the sister I’d met the night before, she was the first person we'd encountered who was acting like she'd lost somebody she loved. Even Marcy hadn't been mourning at this level, but not everybody is so open with their emotions.

"We won't take up much of your time," Hunter said, his tone respectful, "but I do have a couple of questions."

She motioned toward the little sitting area where a loveseat and a couple wingback chairs sat. Normally, we would've preferred to stand, but to be truthful, the woman looked like she was about ready to buckle. I took one chair while Hunter took the other. Suzanne perched in the middle of the loveseat and folded her elegant hands in her lap.

"Please forgive my appearance. I'm usually much more put together than this."

My lips curved into a small sympathetic smile. "No worries. You lost a brother. I have a sister, and if anything ever happened to her, I'd be devastated."

She pressed her lips together, and despite her best efforts, a stray tear slipped down her cheek. "I assume you're here to ask me about the money situation and whether or not I know of anybody who would've wanted to kill my brother.
